For instance, we use cookies to help us remember and process the items in your shopping cart. They are also used to help us understand your preferences based on previous or current site activity, which enables us to provide you with improved services. We also use cookies to help us compile aggregate data about site traffic and site interaction so that we can offer better site experiences and tools in the future. http://ec.europa.eu/ipg/basics/legal/cookies/index_en.htm

We use cookies to:

-identify users

-remember users' custom preferences

-help users complete tasks without having to re-enter information when browsing from one page to another or when visiting the site later.

Cookies can also be used for online behavioural target advertising and to show adverts relevant to something that the user searched for in the past.

How are they used?

The web server supplying the webpage can store a cookie on the user's computer or mobile device. An external web server that manages files included or referenced in the webpage is also able to store cookies. All these cookies are called http header cookies. Another way of storing cookies is through JavaScript code contained or referenced in that page.

Each time the user requests a new page, the web server can receive the values of the cookies it previously set and return the page with content relating to these values. Similarly, JavaScript code is able to read a cookie belonging to its domain and perform an action accordingly.

What are the different types of cookies?

A cookie can be classified by its lifespan and the domain to which it belongs.

By lifespan, a cookie is either a:

session cookie which is erased when the user closes the browser or

persistent cookie which remains on the user's computer/device for a pre-defined period of time.

As for the domain to which it belongs, there are either:

first-party cookies which are set by the web server of the visited page and share the same domain

third-party cookies stored by a different domain to the visited page's domain. This can happen when the webpage references a file, such as JavaScript, located outside its domain.

However, some cookies are exempt from this requirement. Consent is not required if the cookie is:

- used for the sole purpose of carrying out the transmission of a communication, and strictly necessary in order for the provider of an information society service explicitly required by the user to provide that service.

user-input cookies (session-id) such as first - party cookies to keep track of the user's input when filling online forms, shopping carts, etc., for the duration of a session or persistent cookies limited to a few hours in some cases

authentication cookies, to identify the user once he has logged in, for the duration of a session

user-centric security cookies, used to detect authentication abuses, for a limited persistent duration

multimedia content player cookies, used to store technical data to play back video or audio content, for the duration of a session

load-balancing cookies, for the duration of session

user-interface customisation cookies such as language or font preferences, for the duration of a session (or slightly longer)

third-party social plug-in content-sharing cookies, for logged-in members of a social network.

You can choose to have your computer warn you each time a cookie is being sent, or you can choose to turn off all cookies. You do this through your browser settings. Since browser is a little different, look at your browser's Help Menu to learn the correct way to modify your cookies.

If you turn cookies off, Some of the features that make your site experience more efficient may not function properly. Some of the features that make your site experience more efficient and may not function properly.

What type of cookies is used:

Google Analytics

Google Analytics cookie is a simple, easy-to-use tool that helps website owners measure how users interact with website content. As a user navigates between web pages, Google Analytics provides website owners JavaScript tags (libraries) to record information about the page a user has seen, for example the URL of the page. The Google Analytics JavaScript libraries use HTTP Cookies (Is a small piece of data sent from a website and stored on the user's computer by the user's web browser while the user is browsing. Cookies were designed to be a reliable mechanism for websites to remember stateful information or to record the user's browsing activity )to "remember" what a user has done on previous pages / interactions with the website.
The information generated by the cookie about your use of this website (including your IP address) is transmitted to and stored on a Google server
Google Analytics supports two JavaScript libraries (tags) for measuring website:

analytics.js – cookie usage
- The analytics.js JavaScript library is part of Universal Analytics and uses first-party cookies to:
- Distinguish unique users
- Throttle the request rate
When using the recommended JavaScript snippet, analytics.js sets cookies on the highest level domain it can. For example, if your website address is blog.example.co.uk, analytics.js will set the cookie domain to .example.co.uk. Setting cookies on the highest level domain possible allows users to be tracked across subdomains without any extra configuration.

ga.js – cookie usage
The ga.js JavaScript library uses first-party cookies to:
- Determine which domain to measure
- Distinguish unique users
- Throttle the request rate
- Remember the number and time of previous visits
- Remember traffic source information
- Determine the start and end of a session
- Remember the value of visitor-level custom variables
By default, this library sets cookies on the domain specified in the document.host browser property and sets the cookie path to the root level.

Cookie Authentication

Cookie authentication uses HTTP cookies to authenticate client requests and maintain session information. It works as follows:
1. The client sends a login request to the server.
2. On the successful login, the server response includes the Set-Cookie header that contains the cookie name, value, expiry time and some other info.
3. The client needs to send this cookie in the Cookie header in all subsequent requests to the server.
4. On the logout operation, the server sends back the Set-Cookie header that causes the cookie to expire.

Use of Facebook pixel

This website uses the Facebook pixel, a small piece of JavaScript code, that is added to the website in order to optimize ads, report on the success of advertising campaigns across devices and target ads to the audience. The Facebook pixel sends information about your browsing session through HTTP headers to Facebook, including the IP address, information about the web browser, page location, document, referrer and web browser user agent. Pixel-specific data includes pixel ID and Facebook cookie data to connect the events to a specific Facebook ad account and to make a match to a person known by Facebook. Facebook checks whether the person has previously seen or interacted with an ad from our account or if the person matches an audience rule and prepares an analytics report, which contains anonymized or aggregated data. Facebook keeps the information collected from the pixels for 180 days.

Google Tag Manager

For reasons of transparency please note that that we use the Google Tag Manager. The Google Tag Manager itself does not collect personal data. It facilitates the integration and management of our tags. Tags are small code elements which serve to measure traffic and visitor behaviour, to detect the impact of online advertising or to test and optimize our websites. For further information about the Google Tag Manager visit: https://www.google.com/intl/de/tagmanager/use-policy.html

Google Dynamic Remarketing

We use Google Dynamic Remarketing to advertise trivago across the Internet, in particular on the Google Display Network. Dynamic remarketing will display ads to you based on what parts of our websites you have viewed by placing a cookie on your web browser. This cookie does not in any way identify you or give access to your computer or mobile device. The cookie is used to indicate to other websites that "This user visited a particular page, so show them ads relating to that page." Google Dynamic Remarketing allows us to tailor our marketing to better suit your needs and only display ads that are relevant to you. If you do not wish to see ads from trivago, you can opt out of Google's use of cookies by visiting Google's Ads Settings. For further information visit Google's privacy policy.

Google remarketing

When you visit certain pages in the comma online store, we have integrated a program code. A code, which Google previously saved in a cookie in your browser, is transmitted to Google through this. In this way, Google can see that you have accessed certain pages of ours (e.g. the initiation of the ordering process). Later, if you perform Google searches or see advertisements from the Google network on other websites, we have the possibility of presenting you targeted ads of our products there (known as remarketing). If you have a Google account, Google can link this data with your Google account.
You can find information on Google data protection and on the way remarketing works in the Google Privacy Policy as well as in the Notes on Google Remarketing.
You can object to remarketing by configuring your browser so that it does not accept cookies. In doing so, however, you will only be able to use our website in a restricted way.
Additionally, you can deactivate interest-based ads from Google in the Google Ads Settings using the following link https://www.google.com/settings/u/0/ads/authenticated?hl=en.

We use the online advertising program “Google AdWords” and the conversion tracking within the scope of Google AdWords. Google conversion tracking is an analytical service. When you click on an advertisement placed by Google, a conversion tracking cookie is placed on your device.
